Sheinbaum Fires Back at Trump's 'Epicenter' Cartel Remarks
“I could say: It's very difficult to live next to a country with such a high level of illicit drug use; or I could say: It's very difficult to live next to a country that produces so many weapons, but I'm not going to say that,” Sheinbaum told reporters at her morning news conference.
The remarks come as Trump continues to press for direct US intervention on Mexican soil to dismantle cartel networks, arguing that criminal organizations fueling America's drug crisis hold outsized influence within Mexico. His UN address renewed that line of attack, again casting Mexico as ground zero for cartel-driven violence.
Sheinbaum's government has increasingly resisted Washington's pressure campaign on security matters, including a US request to extradite Morena Party officials accused by American authorities of drug trafficking. Since Trump returned to office, she has held to a consistent line: cooperation with Washington, yes, but not at the expense of Mexican sovereignty.
“I’m not going to say it. Why? Because we have a good relationship with President Trump and the US government; so we're working in coordination and making progress,” Sheinbaum said.
The friction stands in contrast to recent signals from within Trump's own administration. In August, DEA Administrator Terry Cole praised Mexico's counternarcotics efforts and singled out top security official Omar Garcia Harfuch as a critical US partner, speaking at the 40th International Drug Enforcement Conference (IDEC) in Argentina.
