Mexico Dispatches Aid to Cuba, Rejects US Embargo Policy
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Monday that Mexico is sending humanitarian assistance to Cuba, while also restating the country’s long-standing rejection of the US embargo imposed on the island.
Sheinbaum told reporters that aid is already being transported.
"We are sending humanitarian aid. In fact, a ship carrying humanitarian aid is departing for Cuba today," Sheinbaum told reporters.
She emphasized that Mexico will continue to express solidarity with Cuba and stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and self-determination.
“Mexico will always act with fraternity and solidarity toward all the nations of the world, and particularly toward Cuba,” she said. “We believe in the self-determination of peoples — a principle that is, moreover, enshrined in Mexico’s Constitution.”
She also reiterated Mexico’s consistent opposition to the US economic blockade on Cuba, saying the stance has remained unchanged for decades and dates back to the Cold War period.
“We do not agree — nor have we ever agreed, from the very first moment in 1962 when the blockade was proposed — with the blockade against Cuba,” she said.
Sheinbaum added that Mexico will continue delivering humanitarian support to Cuba as long as such assistance is needed.
