Iran’s Participation in 2026 World Cup Confirmed
(MENAFN) The Iran Football Federation announced Saturday that the country's national squad will compete in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be co-hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico — ending weeks of uncertainty over Tehran's participation.
Iran's state-run news agency reported that the federation had officially locked in its decision and confirmed that all visa-related procedures connected to the tournament had been resolved.
The federation stated that the national team earned its place through competitive qualification results and has since been actively preparing and training ahead of the tournament's opening.
The month-long competition runs from June 11 through July 19. Iran faces a demanding group-stage schedule: a June 15 opener against New Zealand in Los Angeles, followed by a clash with Belgium on June 21, before rounding out group play against Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
10 Conditions Attached
In a separate report, an Iranian news agency revealed that the football federation had put forward a list of 10 formal conditions underpinning its participation — casting light on the diplomatic friction preceding the announcement.
Among the demands: binding guarantees that all players and technical staff would receive visas without complications and would not be subjected to questioning by US immigration officials during transit or entry.
The federation also called for streamlined visa access for Iranian journalists and fans traveling to matches, heightened American security deployments around airports, hotels, transport corridors, and stadiums, and a strict restriction permitting only Iran's official national flag inside competition venues.
Further conditions stipulated that Iran's national anthem must be played without interruption during matches and that press conference questions be confined exclusively to football-related topics.
